The Advantages & Disadvantages Of Lithium Ion Battery

2021-07-22

Lithium Ion battery or Li-Ion battery is a rechargeable types of battery which features lithium ions that moves from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge and comes back to its original points while charging.

The lithium ion batteries have eventually become popular and its demand has drastically grown up to much greater extent in past few years. There are various lithium ion battery manufacturers who have been producing such batteries to fulfill the needs as per the demand and fill the gap between the demand and supply.

Lithium Ion Battery Advantages & Disadvantages

These batteries are well known for its reliability and the compact size which makes it easy to carry and get it fixed in any of the rechargeable devices. Like all technologies, it has its own advantages and disadvantages.

People are always been looking for the batteries that have good battery life and that is why this battery is popular due to its prolonged battery life but to exploit the li-ion battery technology fully, we need to understand the advantages, disadvantages or the limitations of this technology.

This way it would be much easier for you to strengthen the life of your battery more appropriately. We would first be talking about the advantages of li-ion batteries that how we are being benefited from it? Lithium ion battery is provides us with the following:

High energy density

This is one of the highlighted advantages of lithium ion battery technology. With the increased density of energy this battery technology is being used from smartphones to the high end electric vehicles.

Self-discharge

Other rechargeable batteries are not good with the rate of self-discharge. Due to the existence of Lithium ion cells in the battery the self-discharge rate is quite lower than others. It is around 5% for the first four hours and drops to around 1-2% per month.

Low maintenance

It does not require constant maintenance to continue its flawless performance.

No requirement for priming

Some of the rechargeable cells need to get primed whenever they are charged for the very first time but there is apparently no requirement in lithium ion cells and lithium ion battery.

Availability of variety

There are several types of lithium ion cells which can be used accordingly as per the requirement for a particular application.

Like any other technology, lithium ion battery technology also has various disadvantages which are as follows:

Protection requirement

They are not as rough and tough as some other rechargeable technologies are and one should avoid its overcharging in order to keep protected. They also require a protection circuitry incorporated to ensure the safe operating limits.

Ageing

One of the major disadvantages of this technology us that it may suffer the life drowning process battery ageing.  The ageing of battery solely depends upon the numerous discharge cycles that are completed of this battery before the capacity falls. This can be an issue if they are embedded alone in any of the equipment whereas the detachable one can be replaced easily.

Cost

Again, one of the major disadvantages of this technology is the cost. The lithium ion batteries are typically 40% more costly than nickel cadmium cells.

Immature technology

Although it is being used by many but still it’s an immature technology because it resides in the developing area and a room of improvement still exists.
